Quiz: New Census Data Show Steady Insured Rates in Colorado. How Much Do You Know About Health Insurance?

Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau released a new report on uninsured rates across the country in 2017.

The data echo results from the Colorado Health Institute’s 2017 Colorado Health Access Survey (CHAS), which found the state’s historically high rate of insurance has not changed in recent years.

Methodological differences between the surveys, such as asking about insurance rates at a point in time versus over the course of a year, mean the data won’t always be an exact match—the Census Bureau estimates an uninsured rate of 7.5 percent, while the CHAS found a rate of just 6.5 percent. (You can read more about differences in methods in this report.) But both sources show Colorado has not lost its recent gains in coverage.

The new analysis also provides a national context, showing how Colorado’s experience compares with other states’ and the nation’s.

Many states are seeing similar trends. But that doesn’t mean there are no surprises.
