Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
State Snapshots (html)
Based on AHRQ's 2007 National Healthcare Quality Report, these snapshots provide state-specific health care quality information on types of care, settings of care, five specific conditions and overall health care quality. Strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement are included. For the most recent data year, Colorado's (html) performance for all measures is in the average range, down from "strong" previously.

American College of Emergency Physicians
The National Report Card on the State of Emergency Medicine 2006 (5.2 MB pdf)
This first emergency medicine “report card” is an assessment of the support that each state provides for its emergency medicine system. Measurements were weighted and aggregated, and grades were assigned based on a comparison to the best state’s performance in four categories: Access to Emergency Care, Quality and Patient Safety, Public Health and Injury Prevention, and Medical Liability Environment.

CareerOneStop (html) is an integrated suite of national Web sites that help businesses, job seekers, students and workforce professionals find employment and career resources. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, the site includes a State Information section including State Profiles, where you can find state demographic, employment and services data; and Labor Market Information, with Web site links to state and national career and labor market information offices in a state.

American Diabetes Association
The 2007 diabetes calculator (html) from the American Diabetes Association estimates the economics cost of diabetes in the nation, each state and each congressional district. The total cost of diabetes for people in Colorado in 2006 was estimated at $2.5 million, including both medical costs and lost productivity.

American Legacy Foundation
Saving Lives, Saving Money II (1.05 MB pdf)
U.S. Medicaid expenditure would be $9.7 billion lower if all current smokers in the Medicaid system successfully quit, according to this 2007 look at state spending and smoking. The report estimates Colorado could save $1.8 million in annual Medicaid expenses.

American Lung Association
The American Lung Association 2007 State of Tobacco Control (html) report tracks progress on key tobacco control policies at the state and federal level and assigns grades to tobacco control laws and regulations enacted as of January 1, 2008.

National trends in child well-being have improved slightly since 2000, according to the 2008 version of this publication. Colorado, however, dropped from 22nd among states in 2001-02 to 28th in 2005-06.

Data Snapshot: One Out of Five U.S. Children is Living in an Immigrant Family (html)
Among the 50 states, California (47 percent), Nevada (32 percent), New York (32 percent), Texas (30 percent) and New Jersey (30 percent) had the highest proportions of immigrant children in 2005, according to Kids Count. Colorado ranked 13th, with 20 percent of its children in immigrant families.
 

Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids

This site looks at how states are using their tobacco settlement funds. Tables provide FY06 rankings of state funding for tobacco prevention and trends in state tobacco-prevention spending vs. state tobacco revenues. The National Oral Health Surveillance System (NOHSS) is a collaborative effort between CDC's Division of Oral Health and the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors. NOHSS monitors the burden of oral disease, use of the oral health care delivery system, and the status of community water fluoridation on both national and state levels.

Commonwealth Fund
This June 2007 State Scorecard follows the fund's national report (see below) by assessing state variations across key dimensions of health system performance: access, quality, avoidable hospital use and costs, equity and healthy lives. Colorado placed 30th in quality, 35th in access and 43rd in equity.

This May 2008 report ranks states on factors such as children’s access, cost, quality, equity and potential to lead healthy lives and finds abundant opportunities for all to improve. Overall, Colorado ranked 34th, performing best on children’s potential to lead healthy lives (5th) and worst on access (48th).

This 2008 report to the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Committee shows how Colorado’s VA hospital compares to others in waiting times, staffing levels, infection rates, surgical volumes, quality measures, patient satisfaction, service availability and complexity, accreditation status and patient safety.

Failing Grades: State Consumer Protections in the Individual Health Insurance Market (html)
Families USA surveyed all state insurance departments and compiled information on the laws that each state has in place to protect consumers in the individual market. This June 2008 report compares laws affecting availability of coverage, premiums, pre-existing conditions and other issues.

More than 1 million Coloradans are in families that will spend more than 10 percent of their income on health care costs in 2008, and the majority of them (nearly 83 percent) have health insurance, Families USA reported in late 2007 in a document that looked at health care costs for 14 states.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)
In 2006, NAMI released the a state-by-state analysis of mental health care systems (html). Every U.S. state was scored on 39 specific criteria resulting in an overall grade and four sub-category grades for each state. The national average grade was D; Colorado got a U for unsatisfactory.

National Women's Law Center
National Report Card on Women's Health (html)
This fall 2007 report card gives Colorado a grade of Unsatisfactory in women's health, although the state ranked sixth overall. No state received an overall grade of Satisfactory and the nation as a whole also received a U. Colorado scored second for high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity but was 42nd in first trimester prenatal care and 39th in the percent of women receiving mammograms.

This report uses the Healthy People 2010 objectives to assess women’s health and finds the nation and many states lacking. Colorado comes in seventh overall.

Colorado ranks 43rd in the nation for Medicaid programs by eligibility, scope of services, quality of service and reimbursement, says this report from Public Citizen. Provider reimbursement is the only category in which the state is not in the bottom quarter.

Trust for America’s Health
F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing in America, 2007 (1.96 MB pdf)
Two-thirds of American adults are either overweight or obese, says the 2007 edition of this annual report. Although Colorado is still the leanest state, it is losing ground. Adult obesity rates in the state increased from 16.9 percent to 17.6 percent in the past year. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) set a national goal aiming to reduce adult obesity levels to 15 percent in every state by the year 2010.

Ready or Not? Protecting the Public's Health from Disease, Disasters, and Bioterrorism (html)
For five years, the Trust for America's Health has graded states on key indicators of health emergency preparedness, such as capability to test for biological threats and having a disease tracking system. In 2007, Colorado was one of 15 states with nine of 10 indicators, up from 2006 in which Colorado was one of 13 states with six of 10 indicators.

United Health Foundation
America's Health Rankings™2007: A Call to Action for People and Their Communities (html)
In its annual ranking of the nation and states, America's Health Rankings™ looks at several public health components – personal behaviors, community environment, and health policies and services – and at the overall health outcomes. In 2007, Colorado ranked 16th in the nation, the same as last year, receiving high marks for low prevalence of obesity, low rates of cancer deaths and preventable hospitalizations, and few poor physical health days. The report noted, however, that because Colorado ranks lower for health determinants than for health outcomes, overall healthiness may decline over time.

Women in Government
2008 State Report on Cervical Cancer Prevention (html)
Colorado is among 31 states rated "good" in its efforts to prevent cervical cancer, according to a 2008 report from Women in Government, a nonprofit, bipartisan organization of women state legislators. About 85 percent of Colorado women were screened for cervical cancer in 2003 or 2004.
