CHI’s Health Words Glossary Going Mobile

What is the BRFSS? How about a FSED?

If you’re not sure, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. The Colorado Health Institute is working on the 2015 edition of Health Words – our glossary of all things Colorado health and health policy.

We know that keeping up with all of the words, not to mention the acronyms, used in health policy can be tough, so this tool provides quick definitions to help you make sense of Colorado’s health care discussion.

And, for the first time, the 2015 Health Words will be available in a mobile app. With the glossary on your smart phone or tablet, we hope that you’ll never again be caught in a meeting wondering what exactly everyone is talking about.

Health Words will be part of the new Colorado Health Institute app, which we plan to launch at our Hot Issues in Health Care conference on December 4.

For a brief preview, here are the Health Words definitions for BRFSS and FSED:

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The largest survey in the world with more than 500,000 telephone interviews annually, the BRFSS – pronounced BURR-fuss – estimates the prevalence of health behaviors associated with premature illness or death among adults at national and state levels. Examples include smoking, binge drinking and obesity. Colorado data are available in the Colorado Health Information Dataset (CoHID).

Free-Standing Emergency Department (FSED). A facility that is structurally separate from a hospital and provides a range of care, from routine to emergency. There are two types: A hospital outpatient department owned and operated by a medical center or hospital system or independent centers owned by individuals or groups. The independent centers do not accept public insurance such as Medicaid or Medicare.

We will also have a separate app for our conference. The conference app will serve as a guide for attendees to find breakout rooms, learn more about presenters and set up meetings with other participants. All of the conference materials will be available for download on the app.

These apps are not ready for prime time just yet, but they will be ready for download by the time Hot Issues rolls around.

Speaking of Hot Issues, it’s just four weeks away. Our team is busy prepping presentations, assembling materials and ordering conference swag. If you have not yet seen our conference agenda, you can find it here.

In case you missed it from last week, Policy Analyst Jessica Fern’s latest insight focuses on Farm to School programs and their potential to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among Coloradans.
