Description or Purpose
The CFOI program is a national census conducted in partnership with states to compile work-related fatality data. CFOI data collection by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) began in select states in 1972 and spread to include all 50 states and the District of Columbia by 1992. Colorado has published data on work-related fatalities occurring since 1982 and implemented the CFOI system in 1991.
Case Definition:
Fatalities resulting from workplace injuries, including fatalities on the employer's premises or off if the person was there to work, or if the event or exposure was related to the person's work or status as a employee. Includes self-employed workers, agricultural workers, government employees, volunteer workers and institutionalized persons employed off premises. Also included are suicides and homicides at a workplace, fatal heart attacks and strokes that occur on or off workplace premises if the person was there to work, and travel for work purposes.
